Help Us Plan our 100th Birthday Celebration!

Uff-dah! Can you believe our entire balcony ceiling and walls were once painted dark blue.  At the time of the “blue makeover” in th late 60s, the theatre was operating as a first-release cinema. In their infinite wisdom, the owners decided they should  darken the auditorium interior. So good-bye mural, gold leaf, and all manner of decorative elements. After closing and being dark for two years in the early 80s, there was talk of demolition to make way for downtown parking.  That horrific thought was the catalyst for the formation of the Theatre Preservation Committee and discussions of how to preserve this midwest gem. After securing the building and getting it registered on the National Registry of Historic Places, thankfully among the first orders of business was the restoration of the magnificent mural and other decorative elements, including all the gold leaf that previously adorned the building. In 2028 we will celebrate 100 years of presenting high quality performing arts to the good people of the Gogebic Range and Northern Wisconsin. We think that is something worth celebrating! So far we’ve had two meetings to discuss how best to celebrate, and the NEXT MEETING of the group will be on Monday 23 March. We’d love for you to join the team.
