the annual giving campaign conducted in February. FRIENDS assure the
continued day-to-day operations of
the theatre.

business in people’s
minds throughout the year.

such as the Barton Organ, the Grand Drapes, Handicap Bathrooms and
Air-conditioning.

“BROTHER CAN YOU SPARE A DIME?”
The Depression era song made popular by both Bing Crosby and Rudy Vallee in 1932 seems an appropriate tune for the state of the Arts in Michigan these days.
On July 13 of this year, Michigan Governor Granholm signed an executive order transferring the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, our primary granting body, to the Michigan Strategic Fund in an effort to stabilize the State budget. In searching for funding assistance from other granting organizations, the Theatre staff is finding that most have empty pockets.
The Ironwood Theatre’s own Endowment, which paid out over $15,600 in support of Theatre operations in 2007, is now more than $24,000 below its base line. What that means, plainly, is that the value of the investments held by the Endowment needs to rise more than $24,000 before the Theatre can receive a disbursement of one thin dime.
The costs to keep the Theatre operating - for programming and for maintaining the facility - are huge. Even after cutbacks in usage and conservation efforts, utility bills alone amount to almost $20,000 per year. You can understand why we are making a special plea for support. We all know that while the Nation, the State and our local region are in financial throes. But, we also know the pride the Range holds for this magnificent Theatre and that the Theatre must continue to operate through this period of financial setback.
During the Depression years, theaters were filled with audiences seeking an escape from the hardship of the day. Today, the Ironwood Theatre can serve the same purpose. Live entertainment of a high quality is what the Ironwood Theatre can give to the community. It is what the Theatre has always given the community.
We know that the Ironwood Theatre is, by far, providing the lowest cost in the Upper Midwest for the quality programming it presents. In the coming months you will see many exciting new ideas come forth as we develop the programming lineup for 2010 and the future. As always, we will attempt to keep prices affordable to you, our guests.
As we strive to fulfill our goal of turning the Ironwood Theatre into a center for all the arts, works of visual art will be displayed on the Theatre’s walls for the first time as a regional Center for the Arts. Work by local and regional artists as well as national touring exhibitions will be shown in the Theatre’s Concourse.
Regional businesses and financial supporters have done much to help the Theatre maintain momentum through these hard economic times. You, the public, can claim ownership of this historic structure that brings our communities together to celebrate life in the northern region. The Theatre Board and Staff are only the caretakers. We will survive the recession ... but only with your assistance.
Please support the Theatre through your contributions as a “Friend” or sponsor. And, please support all community arts by attending musical and theatrical performances and films at the Ironwood Theatre, and exhibitions in what will soon be the concourse art walk.
VOLUNTEERS
We could never survive without our volunteers! There
are many opportunities for you to share your time and skills with us
such as sound, lighting,
ushers, box office and general all around office assistance to name
a few. Give us a call so we can add your name to our volunteer corps
at (906) 932-0618.
