Candor and craft are front and center on Erik Koskinen’s new album, Erik Koskinen Live at The Real Phonic Radio Hour. Recorded at the monthly James J. Hill Library Radio Show featuring Erik’s regular band Paul Bergen, Frankie Lee, and JT Bates. All fifteen songs capture the power of music made in synchronous time, place, and company. Koskinen, whose last two albums Keep It To Yourself and America Theatre showcased his witty lyricism, sharp tongue, and poignant songs, does them one better with Live, releasing some old favorites along with eight never-before-recorded songs.
Musically sprouted from the blend of American folk, country, rock-n-roll, and blues, Erik Koskinen and his top-shelf band realize a sound that is distinctive and fresh while familiar and classic. Koskinen’s albums are a lyrical and musical metaphor of American’s theaters of war, of history, of relationships, and of the reflections in the mirror. Knowing but not didactic, Koskinen channels the ways of Whitman and reverently enters the anthology of uniquely crafted wry songs with the likes of Woody Guthrie and Ry Cooder while speaking as plainly as your neighbor.
Just Announced: Erik will be joined by opening act, David Huckfelt - quite a bonus for the audience! David is a founding member, singer and songwriter of transcendental Midwestern folk band The Pines. The flat, endless expanses of The Pines' native Iowa inspires songcraft with a filmmaker's keen eye for detail and framing, blending celestial, ethereal atmospherics with rich, warm vocals and earthy acoustic instruments. Huckfelt collaborates with a rotating array of multi-instrumentalists, with a beatnik’s love of language and a cocktail of blues, folk, country & early American roots music. Erik and David offer a gripping brew that demands your total presence, transporting you into vividly painted musical and lyrical snapshots.

We think after watching the videos of Erik Koskinen and his band, you will agree with us that he is a wizard at uniquely crafted lyrics for his own brand of American folk music. Mix in a little blues, country and rock and you are in for a memorable evening's entertainment. Erik has been performing throughout Minnesota for years and has developed a fan base that appreciates his ability to create musical metaphors of powerful topics. We are pretty sure there will be plenty of Gogebic Range and Northern Wisconsin residents added to that fan base after his show here in Ironwood!
