The USAF Band

Show Dates:

Monday, Apr. 18, 2016

USAF Band of Mid-America

The Band of Mid-America has a long history of entertaining the American public and promoting esprit de corps within the military. The unit strives to inspire the hearts and minds of our men and women serving around the world and to tell the Air Force story through the universal language of music.  The Band of Mid America includes numerous groups including a concert band, rock band, ceremonial band, a roots/folk band, a woodwind quintet and more. Each year, the Band of Mid-America performs for millions of people throughout a ten-state region from the upper peninsula of Michigan to Arkansas.

The Ironwood concert will feature the Shades of Blue Jazz Ensemble, a group of 18 professional enlisted musicians whose repertoire ranges from traditional big band jazz, to bebop and swing, to modern jazz. Their concerts are just as likely to feature the music of contemporary composers as the classic sounds of Count Basie or Glenn Miller. Several of the band's members are also gifted composers and arrangers, and their compositions are often featured in concert.

The band has backed many jazz greats such as Tex Benecke, Denis DiBlasio, Jamey Aebersold, Mike Smith, Bobby Shew, Allen Vizzutti, Jeff Jarvis, Mike Vax, Vaughn Nark, Bill Porter, Carmen Bradford, Shelley Berg, Joe Morello, Steve Houghton, and Walt Levinsky. The ensemble is often requested for featured performances at jazz clinics and festivals throughout the country.

The Ensemble frequently pays tribute to the Air Force's musical heritage, including a collaboration with actor Wilford Brimley on a highly acclaimed salute to Major Glenn Miller.

Whether performing for a head of state, playing the national anthem before a capacity crowd at a professional basketball or baseball game in Chicago or Milwaukee, or for our troops at home and abroad, the Shades of Blue reflects the heritage and pride of our great nation and the United States Air Force.

Don't miss this special Monday evening concert by the Shades of Blue Air Force Big Band. FREE ADMISSION, but donations will be appreciated.

Buster Keaton in "The Navigator"

Show Dates:

Sunday, Apr. 03, 2016

The Navigator.  A Special Sunday afternoon classic silent movie accompanied on the Barton organ by Tim Mesun.

Our hero, Rollo (Buster Keaton) decides to marry his sweetheart Betsy and sail to Honolulu. When she rejects him he decides to go alone, but boards the wrong ship, the "Navigator" which is owned by Betsy's father. Unaware of Rollo's whereabouts, Betsy boards the ship to look for her father, but spies capture him then cut the ship loose. It drifts out to sea with the two socialite passengers, each unaware there is anyone else on board.

At the time of the film's 1924 release, Variety magazine noted the novelty of Keaton's deep-sea diving costume and settings and praised "an abundance of funny business" in the film's underwater scenes.

Experience the Historic Ironwood Theatre just as our parents, grandparents and great grandparents experienced it back in the day. Join us at 2:00pm for a delightful Sunday afternoon as Tim Mesun plays a few favorite tunes then accompanies this silent classic on our Barton Organ.

Tim Mesun is well known around Ironwood for his numerous benefit concerts in aid of various local charities. He recently earned his Associates Degree in Liberal Arts from Gogebic Community College where he graduated with high honors (3.98 GPA), and as a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Tim plans to continue his college education, majoring in music performance.

Tim has frequently been involved with local theatre, including as a band member and rehearsal pianist for Theatre North's various musical productions, where has also created original music for a number of shows. Tim performs Barton organ preludes before most shows at HIT. This will be his first (public) performance as a silent movie accompanist.

Sunday, Mar. 20, 2016

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF DATE! Show rescheduled to SUNDAY MARCH 20, 2016 at 7:30pm

By age seven, Larry Gatlin was already accompanying younger brothers, Steve and Rudy, singing at family and church events. After high school, Larry went to the University of Houston on a football scholarship, where he majored in English and developed "a love affair with the English Language" that later served him in his songwriting.

On the strength of his songwriting talents, Larry Gatlin became known throughout Nashville music Industry. While Steve and Rudy were finishing college, Larry was already touring the small club and listening room circuit as a solo act, looking forward to the time when he could afford to expand his live show to include his brothers.

Known for his rich tenor voice and for the string of pop-inflected hit songs he wrote and recorded throughout the 1970s and 80s, Larry Gatlin is American Country Music royalty. His songs have been recorded Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Barbara Streisand, Tom Jones, and yes, Elvis Presley. His hits are too numerous to list, but include "Broken Lady", "All the Gold in California", "Houston (Means I'm One Day Closer to You)", "She Used to Be Somebody's Baby", and "Talkin' to the Moon".
