IAS Spring Band Concert

Published on Thursday, May. 14, 2015

If you weren' t at the Ironwood Theatre on Wednesday May 13, you missed a beaut! There were so many highlights - the excellence of the technical skills and musicianship of the young performers; the large percentage (can you say "nearly every one"?) of band members who stood to be recognized for their outstanding performances at State/Solo/Ensemble competetions;  the surprise award by students to Mr Steve Boyd, recognizing his 30 years of leadership in the music program at LLW; and the unique ending to the concert when the movie screen was lowered and the band accompanied three short silent movie clips. SO cool!  Thanks to Mr Boyd's creativity and the great group of musicians he directed, we at the Theatre can now claim we've shown silent movies accompanied by all three traditional formats - organ; piano; and now, orchestra!

It would be remiss of us not to also draw attention to somthing Mr Boyd did after he acknowledged students' competition achievements: he asked any band members who had made it onto any academic honor rolls to stand. Nearly everybody on stage stoood up!  Powerful testimony to the value of participation in the performing arts and the impact of that participation on academic performance.  As Mr Boyd has been heard to say to parents: "If you want your children to be around good people - get them involved in music and theatre" We couldn't agree more!
